Chapter 18

ERIC AND VASHON ARRIVED at the luxurious, serene Hollywood Beach Golf & Country on Johnson Street in Hollywood. During the entire drive on the I-95 north highway, Vashon sat quietly in the passenger seat of Eric’s polished dark green BMW, thinking about the conversation he had with Kiera in regards to her working relationship with Santana and bringing work with her on their vacation.

At the golf course, Vashon was sitting in the golf cart watching Eric swing and hit his golf balls off the tee. Vashon was lost in his own world, receiving text messages from Kiera back to back, ignoring every last one of them. At that point, Vashon felt as though he had no words to say to Kiera and he couldn’t bear to hear the many excuses from Kiera’s mouth. When Eric was done, he strolled back to the golf cart. He noticed that Vashon was in a deep stupor until Eric waved his hand in front of Vashon’s face, breaking him out of it.

“Huh?”

“I was yelling out that it is your turn, Vashon,” Eric declared.

“My bad, Eric, I was lost in my own thoughts.” Vashon stepped out of the golf cart. He grabbed his golf club, heading to the spot to hit the golf ball off the tee. “My mind is somewhere else at the moment,” he commented.

“I can see that, son. Did you and Kiera get into another argument or something, Vashon?” Eric questioned.

“It doesn’t really matter, Eric. I can handle my own affairs.”

Eric shrugged his shoulders. “I was simply trying to help you out. I understand I’m not your father, but I want to help you out. I want us to really get along.”

“Isn’t playing golf getting along, Eric?” Vashon inquired as he hit the golf ball off the tee. “Like I said before, I will handle the complications in my marriage.”

Eric truly wanted to bond with Nasir and Vashon, although he realized it was somewhat tough to do given the deep bond the brothers had. Eric saw that Vashon was angry to the point that he was boiling mad. Furthermore, Eric caught a sense that the reason why Vashon didn’t have the ability to come out and tell him his problems was that Vashon wanted to keep it hidden.

“That’s true, Vashon, but at the same time, it is not good keeping this anger locked deep down. You should try speaking to someone.”

Vashon spun around to face Eric and wiped the sweat off his eyebrow. “I guess you’re my therapist now instead of my mom’s husband. Look here, Eric, I’ve been dealing with my problems on my own ever since I was fifteen years old, so you can’t tell a damn thing I don’t already know.”

“Alright, son, do you honestly think I will go back and tell your mother about what we’ve talked about?”

“I don’t know, Eric. Will you do that?”

Eric chuckled to himself. “You have my word that I won’t do that, Vashon. I’ll tell Nasir the same thing.”

Vashon spat on the grass, contemplating whether or not he should break down and confess to Eric.
